Doom II installation diskettes damaged

by "StovePipe" <stove99pipe@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Nov 11, 2005 at 08:45 AM

Howdy gang.

I am not a reg here, but I did check the archives to see if there was
an answer to this question, and I didn't find one.

We bought an old Performa recently and one of the apps that the lady
gave us was the DOOM II pack of seven (7) diskettes to install it.

Well, the disk 1 (the installer) was damaged, but we got around that by
copying it to the Performa and running it from there. Curiously, it
works; politely asking for another diskette as it goes, at least up
'till Disk 4, which it re****ts as being damaged. At that point, it asks
if we want to abort or skip. No matter which one we choose, it aborts,
leaving nothing at all in the newly-created DOOM II folder.

So, the question is: Does there exist an app that can reconstruct what
is missing?

I've heard rumors about this, but never found anything concrete. I do
own an old Stuffit Deluxe, which, IIRC, will make disk images. I am
wondering if it is worth wasting time getting out the old iBook where
it is installed (it was purchased online) and, say, copying all the
diskettes to a Zip disk and connecting that to the iBook, and making
disk images of those diskettes. I do know that the Disk 4 will not copy
to the Performa: it starts up, copies for a while, then aborts. So
there is _some_ good data on the Disk 4, but also some damage.

I should also add that there is an old version of Quake on that iBook,
and therefore I'd like to know if we can reconstruct the DOOM II game
using the Quake Engine. If so, kindly direct me to the archive where
this is described.

Much thanks in advance
SP
