Ah, I solved it to some extent by switching to RAVE. While RAVE doesn't 
have the grave problems of OpenGL, it does exhibit (greatly reduced) 
chunkiness after playing for a long while, as well as during crowded 
scenes (that is, much sooner than the it does running under OS X,) but 
at least it's playable and fun now.

I wouldn't have imagined that something as popular as D2 was would be so 
demanding on a machine as fast as mine under OS 9; was D2 known to be 
Glide-centric like Unreal, or is this just something I've run into?
