Wired vs. Wireless speed

by Lisa Jacobbi <ljacobbi245@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 10, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Hi all,

I just want to ask your opinions on my connection speeds, and whether
everything is kosher. I have a FiOS 20mb down 5mb up connection. When
connected via ethernet cable (12" Powerbook G4 867mhz, 1GB RAM),
speedtest.net says I do in fact get 20,800 kbps down and 5,075 kbps up.
When connecting via wireless G with default WEP encryption (linked at
54mbs verified in Network Utility), it drops to 9,500 kbps down and
4,017 up. (The computer is within 2 feet of the Verizon supplied modem).

Just wanting to make sure that's normal. Is the speed drop due to the
encryption? Would I get more speed by going unsecure? Would that be
security suicide? Or should I be getting more speed anyway?

All input welcome - thanks!

-Lisa
