Evidently you did.

"after retrieving a message" means after the message is downloaded
from the server.   It has nothing to do with deleting the message on
your home machine.

It seems clear enough to me, but use of the word "retrieving" is
rather odd, and that may have been confusing.    It seems to me that
you would only be retrieving it if you had put it there originally,
which presumably you did not.    The apple dictionary seems to back me
up, except possibly when retrieving is done by a dog.  (Even then,
it tells me, the meaning derives from finding _lost_ game -- ie, you
had the bird in the sense that you shot it, and saw it fall.    I hate
to think of how that would apply to mail on the server.)
