Re: Common Myths for the Macintosh

BTW, you might be interested in investigating a few things with
your MacBook that may not be available for PCs.

"PowerKey 650" from Sophisticated Circuits Inc.

It is a combination hardware/software device which allows me
to "phone" my home Macs from any touch-tone phone.

Can turn on the raw AC power to my dead cold home Macs,
start them up from a cold start. Then later remove ALL power
from my home Macs _after_ I am through using them remotely.

....or even turn on/off my lawn sprinklers, security cameras, or
any other electrical devices by punching a few phone buttons
from my hotel room.

Another neat thing is the application "Timbuktu" from Netopia.
It is costly, $100 for each Mac, but it has many features
that the "free" remote programs do not have.

TB2 allowed me to operate my home Macs from a commercial
airliner in mid-Pacific ocean. Several oriental airlines
offered the "mid ocean" feature, for a $25 increase in my fare.
(one german airline offered it also)

Unfortunately, that "mid ocean" service is no longer available,
because Boeing controlled the entire system, pulled it off the
market a few years ago.

Not many business people used the service, so Boeing
was not making enough money to justify the service.

Back to the remote app' Timbuktu for the Mac, which is much
more powerful than the PC version of Timbuktu.

Among other things, I can "remotely" install TB2 on a
distant Mac, one that does not have any Timbuktu.

So what is that good for? Let's assume I have hundreds of
friends and business associates, and only two TB2 licenses.

I can tem****arily install ONE of the TB2 app's into
any one of my friend's Macs, legally, over the Internet,
from thousands of miles away. Takes all of 5 minutes.

That allows me to control their Mac, also allows them to
control my Mac, all great stuff if you have an older family
member who needs help with his Mac.

Mark-
