They just hang around with people who would get so "stoned" as to do

You hang around with a very different crowd than I do... that is for sure.
Heck, I went camping last weekend and my friends were talking a lot about
the people they had been hanging out with: their Mensa group. Turns out
not
only is that group of friends in Mensa but so are some of my other friends
-
they were asking why I never joined. My reply was the little I know of
Mensa it seems a bit elitist - by definition. Their take on it is that it
is more of a sup****t group; people who are significantly different in any
way from the norm have needs and thoughts that others cannot understand
well.
They have asked me to join and I just might consider it... though I do not
know the member****p costs or benefits. I do know the last time I took a
Mensa test was in an eighth grade math class - and I found an error on the
test. :) The teacher sent it in to Mensa and they ended up agreeing with
me.
In any case, while I am sure Mensa folks do plenty of stupid things (just
because someone has a high IQ does not mean they do not do stupid things!)
I
certainly heard no story from my "friends of friends" that would even come
close to the depth of such stupidity as you describe.
Might be interesting to have people in CSMA who are willing take an online
IQ test... though how we would know who is cheating is hard to say. I
took
one for the heck of it the other day and got into their "genius" level.
Somehow I bet you and Carroll would not. :)
