Living with an iPhone for a month.

by Steve Mackay <steve_mackay@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Apr 16, 2008 at 11:47 PM

I purchased a refurbed iPhone about a month ago for $250 from AT&T. It
came to me looking as new. The user interface is slick, and responsive.
I unlocked and "jailbroke" it immediately, waiting 2 weeks for my
contract with AT&T to be up, so I could activate the iPhone. I
"restored" the iphone to a "Virgin" 1.4 state in iTunes, and went
through the painless activation process.

One thing I noticed immediately after activation... EDGE is SLOW! I mean
REALLY slow. Wifi is livable. But doing nearly anything on edge is
painstakingly slow. No wonder everyone is waiting for the 3G version.

Using the iPhone, like I used my Zune to play music during my commutes
on my motorcycle doesn't work so well. The cellphone interferes with my
communication interface(Autocom, it interfaces a rider to passenger
intercom, music device, GPS, GMRS/FRS radios, and cell phone) in my tank
bag. So I have to put it in "airplane" mode for commutes. I may have to
re-locate my Autocom system to under the seat. I do like the fact that
the touch screen still works while it sits in the map pocket.

The cell phone isn't terribly good as well. My wife's new Palm Centro,
and my old Palm Treo 650 both have far better call quality and generally
get 1 to 2 bars better service, sitting side by side the iPhone using
the same AT&T service.

They definately got the interface right, but the rest of the package is
so so...
