A very good question I've been wondering about.
My largest mail boxes are;
In box: 96MB
Plus two others of 30 & 34MB
These 3 mail boxes are used daily.    I do request compaction regularly.
My Eudora is active 24/7.

(Eudora 6.2.4b6 on MacOS X.4.11 Tiger)
