Thanks. While the two accounts aren't functionally different, this did
get me thinking about my settings again, and it turns out that on the
second account, the "User name" was set to the real name rather than the
login name of the account. Since this was in the "checking mail" part
of the preferences and I was never checking mail for that account, I
hadn't noticed the problem. Fixing this fixed the problem.

For my purposes, it doesn't make much difference now.
