By "toggle" do you mean clicking a single icon, rather than
going into the Settings window and turning off "Check spelling
automatically as you type"? If so, then I'm not aware of an
option for that.

Eudora is putting the word in red and underlining it, right?
A bit annoying, but of course, it doesn't affect the message
as it is sent.
