Sure is quiet - iPhone in Oz

by Nigel <noone@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Mar 4, 2008 at 08:01 AM

Maybe its my news aggregator but the group has gone very quiet lately .
Anyway, Im of to the States soon and looking at getting an iPhone (no need
for masses of replies on how good or bad the iPhone is etc etc ).

One thing that was not obvious to me before, but is now, is that you can
buy
an iphone from Apple in the US (online or store) and you don't sign up to
an
AT&T contract on the spot as this all occurs when you activate the phone
when you plug it into itunes for the first time. Therefore one can use
the
various software solutions out there to free your phone and use it
locally.
Anyone done it this way? It avoids the various Oz ebay resellers hawking
unlocked phones for $800-900 when you can get a US store one for us$399.
Of
course you need to be comfortable with unlocking it yourself
