You can open Access databases, but not directly. Here are the notes I
made
at the time I did this:
To transfer files from Access to another database (on another computer):
Ex****t each table/query* in turn as text (delimited) to somewhere easy to
locate.
Ex****t to File: give name (8 characters max)
Ex****t Text Options: Store Field Name in First Row
Open each file in turn in Excel and text im****t wizard will start:
Choose delimited text
Fields separated by comma
General for column headings
Check all rows are present and nothing looks odd (eg dates can change)
Then save as CSV (Macintosh)
When all done, copy all these .csv files to external storage
Then in Filemaker
Open CSV files (direct from USB stick), and select first row as field
names.
Save as xxx Converted in appropriate folder.
Check all rows are present
*Where a query is a result of an Expression needing an entry such as
[a-z],
the above will not work. Open the query, copy and paste into Excel then
save
as above. You will not get the text im****t wizard in that case
Hope this helps. Incidentally, if your friend is thinking of going the
Filemaker route, it is probably worth buying an older version on eBay -
that's what I did and it was about half the price of the current version,
and
I really didn't need the bang up-to-date one.
