MacBook Pro and Boot Camp problem

by Anic <sans@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Oct 3, 2007 at 11:31 AM

Hi,

I have a Mac Book Pro that I bought 2 weeks ago (I finally received it
yesterday). So far, so good, I install the applications I want and
create do***ents to test the built-in camera.

Then, since it's the first time I use an intel Mac, I decided to install
Boot Camp (evil decision!). So I launch Boot Camp, allocate 12 Gb of
disk space for it and restart (with my WinXP CD in the unit).

First problem: you have to install WinXP with SP2 installed. How do you
know by watching the CD cover that this XP has SP2, 1 or whatever? Even
by inserting the CD in the Mac, how do you figure that out? Well, that's
not the im****tant part.

So I ended up on the "Select Partition To Install Win..." page. The
installer only gave me one partition ("C:"). I thought the reason of
this was that the HFS+ partition was not seeable by the installer and so
it only showed the 12 Gb partition (I don't recall how big the shown
partition was).

Then I started formatting (as NTFS, only option shown). When the
formatting reached 7%, I had to cancel the installation (I thought a
virtual file system on my disk would be easily to get rid of). So I held
down Command-Ctrl-Power key and the Mac restarted.

But, since then, it cannot start beyond the grey screen you get on
startup (i.e, just after the initial black/blank screen). You get this
grey screen and nothing happen.

Even worse (and I don't understand that): any keyboard shortcut has no
effect. The "C" key used to boot from the CD does nothing (is totally
ignored). Same for the "T" key (start as target disk mode),
Command-Option-P-R (reset pram), the "X" key and so on.

The only key that does something is the "option" key, but...
If I hit the "option" key, I get the password field (indeed, I have set
a password in open firmware), I enter the password and then all freeze,
holding down the power button for 5 seconds is required (even
command-ctrl-power key has no effect). This is not a matter of password
since this "common" problem (as seen on the web) is also reproductible
to ones who have not set a password (for them, the freeze occurs 5
seconds after the "option" key has been detected).

So... Where to look to understand the problem? What can prevent the Mac
to, for instance, boot from the install CD when the "C" key is pressed
on startup?

Also, if I lose the data, I'll be extremely sad, but since the disk has
been partially formatted as NTFS (7%), if I can access the disk
(certainly not mountable) how do I tell the Mac OS to "consider" the
HFS+ that remains in order to extract my recent do***ents?

Any help welcome!
