Got a cheap software package called "Office Applications" at a used
bookstore. The package includes OpenOffice and AbiWord, among others.
The box says, "No additional software required." But, once installed,
none of the programs work. They all launch OroborOSX which, in turn,
tries to launch XDarwin - unsuccessfully. I then get an error message
saying "OroborOSX has failed to launch XDarwin! Please check the
OroborOSX troubleshooting web page and forums:
http://oroborosx.sf.net/faq.html
http://oroborosxsf.net/forums.htm"
and
four click options: "Version Changes," "License," "OroborOSX Help," and
"Quit." Both URLs are apparently dead links, and the click options, with
the exception of "Quit," are pretty much useless.
Figured I needed X11 so I went to the library to use their high speed
access (I only have dial up), downloaded X11, and burned it to a CD-R.
But my machine won't let me install it. I get an error message saying
saying it can't be installed on my HD because newer software already
exists. The OpenOffice.org site says X11 should be present within the
Mac OS but, if so, why can't I find it (in either the Applications or
Utilities folders, where OpenOffice.org says it should be) and why don't
these apps launch?
Computer details: eMac, OS X (10.4.3), 256 MB RAM, 1.25 GHz PPC G4, 80G HD
I don't understand the above situation. But I also fail to understand
the need for a "windows management system" for OS X. And why have an app
launch two other apps before starting up? Seems an awful lot like
something M$ would come up with. But whaddo I know? (Please don't
attempt to answer that rhetorical question.)
It isn't a big deal (I suppose) if I can't use the apps. But I'd sure
like to if possible. TIA for any help y'all can offer.
Karl
