The drive probably has stiction; the head's become stuck to the
platter and the platter won't spin. That's why the
restart-restart-restart trick works sometimes, it eventually jars the
drive into busting the head loose.
Oddly the cure for this is to take the hard drive out, remove it from
all cables and connections, and drop the HD unit about four inches
onto a hard tabletop. Then reinstall it, start up and get all the data
the hell off your drive before it dies again.
Needless to say this remedy is not recommended by Apple Computer or
any of the drive manufacturers. But it has worked for me on multiple
occasions. Actually with the old all-in-one black & white Macs, I'd
just pick the whole thing up and give it a nice WHOP on the side.
Drive spins right up, everything's groovy. Those original Macs were
made out of cast iron, I swear.
